Russian soldier killed, four injured in Caucasus attacks
Aug, 6th 2008

A Russian interior ministry soldier was killed and four wounded in an ambush yesterday in the restive southern province of Ingushetia, Russian news agencies reported. Separately a policeman was wounded in an attack early yesterday in the neighbouring province of Chechnya, Interfax reported. In the Ingushetia incident, interior ministry troops came under fire on a road near the town of Nazran. The attackers fired automatic weapons and grenade launchers at the troops' vehicle, a police source told RIA Novosti. Interfax reported they used tracer fire for accuracy and fired from trees on either side of the road.

Another policeman was killed in a separate incident in Ingushetia earlier on Saturday. Insurgent attacks are an almost daily occurrence across much of the mainly Muslim North Caucasus. In Ingushetia there has been mounting anger at alleged killings and abductions by the security forces and occasional street protests demanding the resignation of provincial administration chief Murat Zyazikov.

The policeman injured in Chechnya on Sunday came under fire from unknown attackers during a search operation with other officers in the village of Alleroi, east of Grozny, Interfax reported, quoting a source in the Chechen security forces. In Chechnya Moscow has fought two wars since the Soviet Union's 1991 collapse.
